Teddy Riner is taking his training philosophy that helped him become the most successful judoka in Olympic history beyond the tatami. The three-time (individual) Olympic champion has launched OLY, a personalized fitness app developed with members of the performance team behind his Olympic success.
He has partnered with wellness app publisher Rocapine and health insurer Alan for the project, which launches worldwide with an initial focus on France and the USA. Among those involved in developing OLY is Julien Corvo, Riner's physical and mental performance coach.
Rather than simply offering users a large library of workouts, OLY is designed to create an individual training program and continuously adjust it according to the person using it.
Users are assessed according to their goals, available time and preferred way of exercising, but OLY also looks at behavioral characteristics. Whether someone is naturally disciplined or needs enjoyment to remain motivated, prefers endurance or explosive exercise, or has a more outgoing or reserved personality can influence the way the program is presented.
Before each workout, users complete a short check-in covering their fitness, energy level and muscle soreness. The planned session can then be adapted to how they feel that day. Training can take place at home or in a gym, with equipment or using body-weight exercises.
Riner himself provides the recognizable face and voice of the coaching experience. The idea is that users receive guidance throughout the program rather than being presented with hundreds of exercises and left to construct their own training. Nutritional guidance and tailored stretching are also included.
“Don’t think of exercise as a constraint; think of it as something to enjoy," Riner said. "Sport doesn’t necessarily mean going to a gym or riding a bike. It means moving in your own way, based on who you are. That is exactly what we have put into OLY: assessing who you are and what you need, then giving it to you in the right way.”
OLY does not promise to turn its users into Olympic champions. Riner has a more modest and ambition: Get people to exercise regularly.
