Toni Pepia gets silver in African Open

Toni Pepia got her second Continental Open silver at the African Open in Casablanca. Like her teammate, Jacob Yang, Pepia also got her first silver at the Pan-American Open in Montreal last November.

Pepia made short work of her first opponent, Li Lok Iu (HKG) by pinning her for ippon within the first minute.

She won her second match, against Carla Tavares Fernandes (LUX), also with groundwork, strangling her opponent into submission.

For her semifinal match, Pepia threw her opponent Rima Bourihane (CAN) twice, for a waza-ari and a yuko, and then pinned her for a yuko as time ran out.

In the final, Pepia conceded a waza-ari after she was knocked down Chaima Sidaoui (TUN) and while she was on her hands and knees (but elbows still off the ground), the Tunisian pushed her down onto her side. In the last minute, Pepia was countered when she tried to do soto-makikomi. Yuko was given. This, together with the waza-ari earlier, was enough to win Siadoui the match.
