+78kg Gold: Lee (KOR)

+78kg Gold: Lee (KOR)

Lee Hyeonji, only 19 years of age, gave the performance of a lifetime winning all of her matches leading up to the final in under a minute each.

She threw Moira Morillo (DOM) with kosoto-gari for ippon in five seconds. Lee then threw Karen Leon (VEN) with harai-goshi in nine seconds.

It took her 37 seconds to secure an ippon against Asya Tavano (ITA) but that was because it was groundwork.

Lee’s semifinal was against Raz Hershko (ISR) one of the best in the category. Lee threw her with kosoto-gari for ippon in 48 seconds.

Her final match, against Romane Dicko (FRA), was the only one that really stretched her. She was actually down by a shido when midway through regular time, she caught Dicko with an ashi-guruma for waza-ari. She immediately followed that up with a kesa-gatame for waza-ari-awasete-ippon.

The total time Lee took to win the gold medal was less than five minutes.
