Tashkent GS: Day 1 Overview

-48kg Gold: Hui Xinran (CHN)

The top favorite in this category was Shirine Boukli (FRA) but she lost her first match, against Mizuki Harada (JPN). Another top prospect for gold, Assunta Scutto (ITA) lost in the preliminary rounds to Laziza Haydarova (UZB). That left the field wide open for Hui Xinran (CHN).  She defeated Erza Muminoviq (KOS) with juji-gatame, then she held down Tugce Beder (TUR) as well as Haydarova (UZB). In the final, she threw Harada (JPN) with a very low ouchi-gari for waza-ari, to win the gold.

-60kg Gold: Ahmad Yusifov (AZE)
Ahmad Yusifov (AZE) started off by throwing Samariddin Kuchkarov (UZB) for yuko with an exciting technique, a variation of the Khabarelli but done off a conventional high grip rather than a Georgian grip. Next, he threw Jairo Moreno (ISR) with tai-otoshi for yuko. He got his first ippon of the day countering Mehrzod Sufiev (TJK) with kosoto-gake in Golden Score. He won his semifinal against Doston Ruziev (UZB) with a sumi-gaeshi off the ground for yuko. The final was an all-Azeri affair, where he faced off against teammate, Balabay Aghayev (AZE). They obviously knew each other very well and no score in regular time. Both players had two shidos each when about two and half minutes into Golden Score, Yusifov scored with a drop sode for waza-ari.

-52kg Gold: Kokoro Fujishiro (JPN)
Kokoro Fujishiro (JPN) threw her first opponent, Tinka Easton (AUS) with uchimata-sukashi for yuko, then finished her off with tomoe-nage for ippon. Next, she threw Sofia Asvesta (CYP) with sode-tsurikomi-goshi for ippon. Her semifinal match against Odette Giuffrida looked like it was going to head into Golden Score when Fujishiro took a Georgian-style grip that forced the Italian to the ground. A series of groundwork moves ended up with kami-shiho-gatame for ippon. There were no scores in regular time in her final against Khorloodoi Bishrelt  (UAE) but in Golden Score, a failed uchimata by Bishrelt allowed Fujishiro to do her groundwork and pin Bishrelt for the win.

-66kg Gold: Hifumi Abe (JPN)
Hifumi Abe kicked off his campaign in style, throwing his first opponent, Adam Jazan (ISR) with de-ashi-barai for waza-ari and then sode-tsurikomi-goshi for ippon. After that, he threw Temur Nozadze (GEO) with ouchi-gari for ippon. His hardest match was against Zamohshari Bekmurodov (UZB) whom he with osoto-gari for waza-ari, and then pinned for yuko. Bekmurodov struck back with soto-makikomi for yuko but couldn't get back the waza-ari deficit by the end of regular time. In the semifinal, Abe used sode again, scoring yuko against Valerio Accogli (ITA). This was enough to win him the match. The final was an all-Japan affair but it was not a long, drawn out match. Rather, it was a very fast one. Abe threw teammate Shinsei Hattori with a sode-harai-goshi combination for ippon in 36 seconds.

-57kg Gold: Shukurjon Aminova (UZB)
Shukurjon Aminova (UZB) was not a favorite but at the end of the day, she gave the home crowd what they wanted. She threw her first opponent, Zhanar Zholdosheva (KGZ) with ouchi-gari for yuko. Then, she threw Timna Nelson Levy (ISR) also with ouchi-gari for yuko. This thrust her into the semifinal, where she was pitted against Eteri Liparteliani (GEO), who was a favorite to win. The match went into Golden Score and this is where it got a bit controversial. Aminova scored ippon with soto-makikomi but both players were already outside the contest area when the throw started. The ippon was sustained though, and with that, Aminova was through to the final where she fought Mio Shirakane (JPN). It was a match of penalties and right before the end of regular time, Shirakane was given her third shido. So, Aminova, who only had two shidos, secured the gold for the home crowd.
